THE  REGENERATION FESTIVAL

10 DAYS OF WORKSHOPS, WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS TO REGENERATE A DAMAGED AREA, INVOLVING THE COMMUNITY.

Periferica is an award-winning festival of urban regeneration, art and creativity that takes place in Mazara, Sicily.
Since 2013, dozens of European students, academics and artists come every year to celebrate creativity and share their skills with other experts and inhabitants.

The program lasts 10 days and aims to transform abandoned areas into useful spaces with and for the local community, developing solutions through a transdisciplinary, multi-scalar and co-created design approach, moving from architecture to multimedia. Through seminars, workshops, visits, discussions and events, the global and local community mix, creating a temporary micro-village near the project area.

THE OPEN MUSEUM

While representing a quarter of the national cultural heritage, Sicily manages to attract only 10% of the national tourist flow. Data shows how the origin of this phenomenon resides both in development and promotion policies, as well as in the quality and management of tourist-cultural facilities, which make these places still far from the new needs of the users.

However, in the rest of the world, cultural spaces hybridize itself with new services, aiming at innovation as a guarantee of success, promoting the birth of communities, intercepting increasingly younger targets and becoming new development magnets.

From 2018 Periferica promotes the open museum, a training program created to experiment innovative ways in the creative and museum environment. The format was created for Evocava, a project for regeneration and enhancement of the heritage of the quarries of Mazara: a disused area of about two hundred thousand meters paintings divided into galleries, caves, parks and gardens.

Through co-creation processes and training courses, we want to bring this heritage – made up of both places and people – to the center of new development dynamics linked to a community vision. Starting from a question: what should a museum open to?

THE SUMMER SCHOOL

10 days, 3 workshops, 80 participants, to develop the theme of the Open Museum through the three key words to imagine, activate, evoke. Adopting an interdisciplinary approach, the themes of accessibility, preparation and interaction will be addressed, aiming at the production of new contents for the cave museum. The participants will share the Periferica spaces together with directors, tutors and volunteers, giving life to a unique experience able to generate impact, create new relationships and discover the territory.
