ECHO
– REGENERATING COLLECTIVE MEMORY
Interaction Workshop

On 3rd March 2018 Periferica brought to light, after centuries, an underground quarry of over two thousand square meters. Now, space becomes a project area to rethink the future of the underground city starting from a museum.
Eco – regenerating the collective memory is the theme of the Interaction workshop, which takes place in Sicily, in Mazara del Vallo (TP) from 1st to 10th August, on the occasion of the sixth edition of the Periferica, International festival of urban regeneration. It’s an occasion to think, design and implement one or more interaction systems for Evocava, a museum within the underground quarry, starting from the digitalization of the collective memory linked to the heritage of the quarries.

With a multidisciplinary approach, participants will be able to collaborate with experts and participate to each step of the design process, from analysis to implementation.

It is possible to apply as a Participant while seats last.
The workshop will last 10 days, alternating training, excursions and events, and will include hospitality, food, and a certificate of participation (3cfu).

Phase 1
Memories Collection

How has the relationship between quarries and inhabitants changed?
In Mazara, the quarries occupy an area of about 200,000 m2 defining a territorial system divided into gardens, galleries, caves and open-air spaces.
The workshop will start with an exploratory phase, aimed at analysing the ethno-anthropological value of the cave system. Led by architect Mario Tumbiolo, we will visit the places involved in the Evocava project, coming into contact with the soul of the neighbourhood Macello.

80% of the quarries were generated during the 1800s. Eco, the underground quarry, has been used until 1939. Together with the director Salvino Martinciglio and the curator Paola Galuffo, we will collect direct and indirect testimonies provided by locals through videos, photos, stories, objects.

Fase 2
Analysis and Selection

Contents will be clustered with the aim of building an initial database. From here, a meta- planning phase will start to evaluate the development of one or more interaction systems.

Together with Mario Vitti (Geologis), we will explore new technologies that can be used to digitalize cultural spaces.

Phase 3
Project

A new interaction system for the Evocava museum.
A system able to improve the use of the museum, the involvement of the visitor, through a highly inclusive process capable of bridging the knowledge gap of the new generations.

How do cultural spaces adapt to the new needs of users?
With which technologies?

Together with Maurizio Schifano (HypeBang Studio) and Sofia Corrao (Mixed Reality Lab, University of Nottingham), case studies and good practices will be shared to show how technology can play a fundamental role in building engagement and encouraging the fruition of cultural environments.

Phase 4
Prototyping

The best proposal emerging from the work groups will be developed and prototyped by the participants, divided into groups.

Phase 5
Final Exhibition

The final projects will be presented to the public through a dedicated event. Participants will be able to describe the outputs obtained and guide visitors through the space through the new fruition system.
